Saturday the 24th of August the Rotary GTR race sponsored by Glencore, took place for the 33rd year in a row.

Since day one the goal of the GTR was to make a difference in our local community & still today that is the main goal of the Premier charity event in Mpumalanga.

After the very cold weather experienced last year, everyone was wondering what Mother Nature will dish up this year. Mother Nature delivered with a beautiful day!

With some changes made through the park and ride system that was implemented, the traffic challenges experienced during the 2018 race was largely eliminated through assistance from the CSC Tactical team.

12 000 runners enjoyed the event and it was wonderful to see the smiles on the faces of the participants doing all the races, from the 5KM fun run and team run to the 15KM & 32KM individual races.

This was the second year that the race ran from Middelburg to eMalahleni which ended at the Witbank Dam. The race finish will return to Middelburg for the 2020 event on 22 August.

The Rotary GTR has been blessed with sponsors that assist year after year and one of those are our main sponsor, Glencore Operations South Africa that has been part of the GTR event for the past 9 years.  Over 45 Other sponsors joined hands with Rotary this year to make this event a success.

As the GTR has grown over the years, the need has also grown. As the GTR is a non profit event, help is needed from local businesses and the local community to bring relief for those who are in desperate need of upliftment and help. Some of the projects that make a huge impact are the seniors and children from disadvantaged communities that are taken to Badplaas resort for a respite week. The Edu-Container project brought in over 80 containers from Canada with school and medical equipment, desks and chairs including over a million books. Hundreds of wheelchairs have made a difference to the quality of life of many people. Assistance to school feeding schemes and sustainable veggie gardens helped to keep our kids healthy.

The Rotary GTR remains a community investment project driven by the community for the community and a vast number of community projects have benefited from the race over the years.

The GTR is a registered NPC and PBO and is in a position to issue certificates for CSI and SED purposes.

The GTR 2019 event has raised R800 000 in total which will be donated to a number of beneficiary organisations in the local community as identified by the GTR for Charity board.

See you at the GTR 2020 event in Middelburg next year!
